Food is at the centre of the holiday season. It brings people together in a sharing of memories, traditions and flavours that we nostalgically associate with this time of year.
There are countless varieties of holiday foods that are unique to only particular areas or countries. At Bisou, our French bakery loves celebrating the holidays around the world.
Bûche de Noël – France
The Bûche de Noël is also known as a Yule Log and is a sweet dessert served in France around the holidays. The traditional way of making this dessert involves a combination of heavy cream, eggs, sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla.
Shuba – Russia
In Russia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th in alignment with the Julian Orthodox calendar. Shuba is a savoury dish that consists of pickled herring, hard-boiled eggs and mayonnaise on a bed of grated seasonal vegetables which during the winter usually consist of carrots, beets and potatoes.
Panettone – Italy
The panettone is a quintessential Christmas cake in Italy and is eaten during the holiday season all around the world, not just in Italy. This dome-shaped bread loaf is filled with candied fruit, dried fruit and lemon zest. This dessert can either be enjoyed on its own or with a snowy dollop of mascarpone cream.
Sufganiyot – Israel
At Bisou, during the 8 days of Hannukkah, we celebrated with a limited edition syfganiot filled with a decadent jam made specially in-house by our master bakers. These are a traditional dessert enjoyed in Israel.
Christmas Cake – England
English Christmas cake is traditionally made with dried fruits, nuts and a splash of brandy. This cake is a dessert where recipes vary from family to family, whether preferred crumbly or moist, dark or a light golden colour, in the shape of a log or a dome, the options are endless. A coin can be added to the cake and whoever gets the coin in their piece, experiences happiness and wealth during the coming year.
