Let’s take a look at 10 of the world’s most favourite cookies, what makes them different and just why we love them so much.
One of the biggest differences in cookies is the ratio of ingredients and how they’re baked, as every method creates a vastly different texture and taste. For example, the majority of our most favourite cookies are baked using the drop method where the dough is spooned onto a baking sheet. In the oven, the dough flattens as the fat content melts from the heat. Chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin and peanut butter cookies are all made this way.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies are a pinnacle of classic taste. They’re simple, yet effective in making an impact. Depending on how you like them, they can be made chewy and soft or crispy and crunchy. They are, as previously mentioned, a type of drop cookie as they are made by taking a spoon and dropping small portions of dough onto a baking sheet.
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Oatmeal raisin cookies are made with oats, raisins and brown sugar. This blend of ingredients makes them an incredibly soft, chewy and comforting cookie that some like to have as a breakfast cookie while others, a special treat.
Gingerbread is a traditional holiday flavour, with gingerbread cookies in the form of gingerbread men and panels for gingerbread houses being a family staple in households all across North America. Their taste is due to a unique blend of spices including ginger, molasses, nutmeg and cinnamon. Different from the drop cookie method, this dough is rolled out and retains its shape in the oven.
Snickerdoodles are popular for their cracks and signature coating made from cinnamon and sugar. They’re incredibly fragrant, smelling like warm cinnamon buns and having a deliciously crispy sugary texture. They only use butter, sugar, flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and vanilla.
Shortbread cookies are decadent with butter flavour as they are made with significantly larger quantities of shortening or butter than the other cookies. Their high butter content and low flour and sugar content make them pleasant to eat without being overpowering and incredibly light and tender.
Macarons, not to be confused with macaroons, are a type of french cookie that sandwiches a creme ganache in the middle. They are light as a cloud and feature egg whites, almond meal and powdered sugar. Often, they are traditionally made using a wide range of soft, pastel colours.
Macaroons have a unique taste as they are made with a large amount of coconut. They are sticky, chewy and perfectly sweet.
Peanut Butter Cookies
Peanut butter cookies are another type of drop cookie and the favourite of many peanut butter lovers. They are soft and incredibly chewy due to their high peanut butter and brown sugar content.
A classic Italian cookie, biscotti are twice-baked, which their name lends itself to. They are hard and crunchy, usually being perfect for dipping into tea or coffee.
Sugar cookies are a simple and classic cookie, often being the base of other types of cookies. They are only made with butter, flour, sugar and vanilla. Different from the drop cookie and similar to gingerbread, they’re rolled out and shaped with various fun cutouts, retaining their shape in the oven.
